The winners receive Awarded by the University Centre Grimsby, our annual Hammond House Short Story Prize attracts writers from around the world in search of recognition, publication and valuable feedback.

The winners receive a cash prize, and worldwide publication of their work in an anthology of short stories, together with twenty-four shortlisted entries.

Cash prizes are kindly donated by Estuary Words and The James Reckitt Library Trust.

Write a short story of 1200-3000 about anything that changes, from the seasons, to relationships to attitudes, and more.

Clicking on an event will open a new page with a detailed description and a link to the organizer’s submission page.Be creative, be unpredictable, be different; the judges are looking for intriguing ideas and addictive prose.Celebrating Manchester as an international city of writers, finding diverse new voices, and creating opportunities for writer development.The competition, is open to anyone over 16 years of age.Entries should be in the form of a love letter and entrants are free to write about whatever they wish as long as the theme of love and the form of a letter are adhered to.The Competition was established in 2008 by Carol Ann Duffy (UK Poet Laureate 2009-19) and has awarded more than £175,000 to writers.Each year two £10,000* prizes are awarded: the Manchester Poetry Prize for best portfolio of poems and the Manchester Fiction Prize for best short story.The anthology of the same name has gone on to sell copies all over the world.The theme for the 2019 competition – Leaving – is intended to be inspirational, not restrictive, so please feel free to interpret it in any way you choose.Use your imagination, and see what stories you see in the contest picture, entitled “Blue-White Stairs”!Our ongoing writing contests are open to all, including past winners.
