The mixture of the scientific statistics, and personal anecdotes validate his argument, and make the reader agree with what he is saying.

In “Embraced by the Needle” Mate discusses the ways in which addiction is bred and how it can eventually take over someones life.

Mate talks about two of his patients , who were abused or sexually assaulted in their childhood years. One of the statistics that he mentions illustrates that about 8% to 15% of people become addicted by using alcohol or marijuana because of their emotional vulnerability.

Finally Mate thinks that bad life experiences like childhood abuse, sexual assault and other reasons can increase the ones’ chances of being addicted to drugs.

At first, he explains the physiological effects of using drugs.

Then, he reflects upon different degrees of stress that cause emotional youths are easily involved in substance abuse.Mate is a physician; he lives in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside which he considers as the drug capital of Canada. He also estimates addict population in Vancouver is around 3,000 to 5,000 individuals. What he means with that it is not the drugs that causes the addiction, it is the people and the hidden reasons that drive them to do the drugs in the first place, also the way it makes them feel.According to Mate If people grow up in an abusive environment and have never experienced love, they turn to drugs in order to have the feeling that they miss and want.Mat uses scientific search to identify the biological essence of the “high”, which is a condition under the influence of drugs. He explains how the drugs interact with the brains chemistry to give the user pleasure.Although some may agree with Mate’s argument, the ways in which he gives his evidence and examples lacks all the necessary information needed in order to make a decision on whether you agree or disagree with his argument. In paragraph four Mate uses a scientific example saying, “Only about 8 per cent to 15 per cent of people who try, say alcohol or marijuana, go on to addictive use.” (305) While this statistic may be true, it is difficult to report on how many of those people of that eight to fifteen per cent are using it because they simply have an addictive personality. Moreover, he insists that drugs can instantly make people become addicted after a few attempts. As an expression of an addictive twenty-seven year-old sex trade worker: “it felt like a warm, soft hug” (273), Maté suggests this feeling is one of the reasons why people become addicted.
