The Color Purple is an African American staple piece of literature.

The film released in 1985 directed by none other than Steven Spielberg won a Gold Globe for Best Actress: Whoopi Goldberg, Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing, NAACP Image Award for outstanding Motion Picture and earning $142 million box office sales.

When it comes to a straight couple living together, it is very rare to see a man being more fastidious than the woman is and even rarer to see him take up most of the cleaning and childcare jobs.

Yet, this unbalance is seen as acceptable by society as a whole.

The types of movies we watched were different and the types of books we read were also different.

It would be thought of as bizarre for me, a male, to cry during Titanic, or to read Cinderella.Nobody looks at them as if they are letting the gender down.Conclusion A man that acts within his own gender role is lauded, but a woman is forced to stay within a certain fence within her role.Femininity is usually associated with traits such as emotionality, cautiousness, collaboration, common sense, and fulfillment.Within this essay I will prove that gender roles are still a massive part of our society and that people claiming equal rights and equal privileges are fighting a losing battle–if not are actually hurting their own cause.We cannot show many of our feelings like woman do because we will be considered weak.When my great grandfather died about four years ago, my sisters and my mother were crying, but my father, my brother and I were expected to stay strong and not cry.Men have standards and specific career goals that we must live up to according to how others judge.Career goals are based on predetermined ideas of gender roles.Gender roles are far more a part of our society when it comes to parenting.It is seen as far worse for a mother to abandon a child than for the father to abandon the child.
