The competition is open to all UK Year 12 state school students.

Submitted essays should be no more than 750 to 1,000 words in length.

The answer is that entering a law essay competition can be lucrative and what student doesn’t need a bit of extra cash?

Another reason is that the prestige of winning can do wonders for your future career in the law and you may enjoy seeing your photograph as a winner on legal websites.

This will take place from Thursday 4 July to Friday 5 July 2019, and will include attendance at our Open Day, academic taster sessions with Law tutors, activities with current Merton Law students, and more.

Attendees will be invited to stay overnight at Merton, gaining a first-hand insight into the life of a Merton undergraduate.

Within essays we are looking for clarity of structure, argument, and style, and effective use of relevant information and ideas.

The winners will have their essays published on the Merton College website, and will be invited to join us for our Merton Pre-Law Residential.

Entrants will compose, on a subject of their choice, an essay which is supported by comparative legal reasoning.

The submitted text must be unpublished, never formally examined and contain at least 100,000 characters. Entrants must send a print and an electronic version of the text to the Société de législation comparée, 28 rue Saint-Guillaume, 75007 Paris, France and no later than October 15, 2019. The selection committee will present the results of its deliberations at the Society’s birthday colloquium in December 2019.
